IRENE AND ABE POLLIN ESTABLISH
$1 MILLION RESEARCH FUND TO FIGHT RARE BRAIN DISEASE

- Irene and Abe Pollin Research Fund for corticobasal degeneration research is established with CUREPSP to find the cause and cure for rare neurological disease -

Irene and Abe Pollin, Chairmen and Owners of Washington Sports & Entertainment, have donated $1,000,000 to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy—CUREPSP—to establish a fund to support research in corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and to find the cause and cure for the rare neurological disease. Abe Pollin has suffered with CBD for several years. CBD is a disorder closely related to progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and superficially similar to Parkinson’s disease.

“Irene and I are very proud to make this contribution and it is our hope that this will encourage additional research to help find a cure for CBD, “said Abe Pollin, Chairman of Washington Sports & Entertainment. “I can personally attest to the frustrating and debilitating effects of CBD and would hope that a cure is found very soon, so that fewer people will have to suffer from this terrible disease.”

CUREPSP, which includes CBD in its mission of research, education and patient support, will be responsible for awarding and monitoring the research grants. Projects with a translational emphasis will be favored in the review process.

“Irene and Abe’s very generous contribution is by far the largest single gift ever received by CUREPSP, and certainly the most important for CBD research in the history of the Society. We, and our international consortium of scientists and researchers, are truly grateful for their generous support and are confident that this gift will have a positive impact not just on CBD, but on all neurological brain diseases,” said Richard Gordon Zyne, President and Chief Executive Officer of CUREPSP.

ABOUT CUREPSP
Vision
  • Cure and prevent progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD)

    Mission
  • Increase awareness of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD), fund research toward a cure and prevention, educate health professionals, and provide support, information and hope for persons and families with PSP and CBD.

    Research - Strategic Directions
  • Identify the etiology and pathogenesis of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD).
  • Develop practical diagnostic tests that would be effective in the earliest stages of the diseases.
  • Develop treatments to palliate symptoms, as well as to prevent, slow, halt, or even reverse the progression of the diseases.

Outreach and Education - Strategic Directions
  • Communicate the mission and vision of CUREPSP in a compelling and consistent manner and to be the primary organization providing outreach, education, advocacy and hope to patients, their families, and the general public.
  • Provide scientific and clinical information to physicians and healthcare professionals regarding the specific nature of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD), their diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment.

  •
